The band began as a pure black metal act and slowly evolved and became a blackened death metal band and is now a modern death metal band. Most of this is thanks in part to the recruitment of drummer Inferno, which took the band's style of metal to the next level.

The permanent nucleus and creative core of Behemoth is largely considered to be that of Nergal & Inferno, with them being the only consistent members through the last number of studio-albums. Until the addition of Orion the band had utilised the services of a couple of session bassists, such as Novy (then) of Dies Irae (Pol) and Vader.
